Micky looks ahead to start of the FA Cup

4 November 2022

Micky Mellon met with the local press on Thursday afternoon to preview this weekend’s FA Cup clash against Carlisle United at Brunton Park.

Before discussing the cup tie, Micky was asked his thoughts on a valuable point during the week against Stockport County.

“Tuesday was a hard fought point and as we keep saying, we’re a developing young team. Coming up against teams like Stockport who, and I mean this with the greatest respect, have a really expensively recruited team. So us coming up against that gives us a bit of a benchmark in regards to the teams who are paying a lot of money for their players. We definitely stood up to it and are moving in the right direction.

“We definitely wanted to win the game and had the best chances in the game but all of the signs are positive. Before anyone says that we set up just get a point, we don’t. It’s the way football works. We work hard to score goals and defend with the right attitude.

“We have to score more goals but that’s got to come from all over the team and from different ways of scoring goals. We need to keep working hard to do that but we’re trying to get better all of the time. We’ll be the first to admit if there’s a part of the game we need to get better at and that is one. If we can do that and get cleans sheets then we’ll pick up a lot of points."

Attention turns to the tradition of the Emirates FA Cup this weekend, a competition which Micky reinforces is an ‘opportunity financially’ for the Club.

“The FA Cup is huge for us and it’s an opportunity financially for us to bring money into the club. So we will go for it and hopefully get the rewards that can come your way if you do well in it. We’ll go and attack and hopefully that will come our way."

Having faced the Cumbrians just one week ago in a disappointing defeat, the Boss is naturally looking for an improved performance against the same opposition.

“I think we’re going to know each other a lot better than we would most other teams. We’re obviously disappointed with our performance against them last week so we’ll be looking to improve on that so we’re looking forward to it.
