Tranmere Rovers’ run in the Vitality FA Cup came to an end after defeat against Burnley Women in the First Round Proper.
The tie got off to a difficult start after a lack of concentration from kick off caused Rovers to concede after just eight seconds.
It was a dominant first half by the visitors who proceeded to show why they are unbeaten in their league this season as they doubled their lead after a long range effort from Millie Ravening flew past Katy Maddock.
Rovers came close to getting one back after Laura Pennington’s free kick went inches over the bar before Burnley netted a controversial third with a close range header from Olivia Greenhalgh who survived offside shouts from the Rovers defenders.
Ravening and Greenhalgh grabbed their second of the game and Burnley’s fourth and fifth in just five minutes to give Tranmere a mountain to climb.
Moments before half time it was another blow for Tranmere as Ellie May took a shot from distance that found the back of the net to give Burnley a six goal lead at half time.
Tranmere started the second half strongly with a number of attacking chances but a firm Burnley defence denied a goal for the home side.
It wasn’t long before Burnley found themselves back in their attacking half with Millie Ravening getting her third of the afternoon and Burnley’s event after converting a close range effort.
Despite the tie being out of sight for Tranmere they continued to battle with two close chances from Bethan Woolley and Ellie Doyle but neither could find the net for Rovers.
Laura Pennington came close with a free kick that just skimmed the wrong side of the bar.
Although Rovers continued to fight it wasn’t to be for the girls as Burnley finished off the tie with two more goals from Aimee Kelly and Leah Embley.
The full time whistle was blown and Tranmere exit the Vitality FA Cup after a fantastic run.
Up next for the women’s team is Wigan Athletic away in the North West Women’s Regional League on the 4th December at Brocstedes Park, 2pm kick off.
