Penalty shootout delight as Tranmere put themselves in the hat for the First Round proper of the Vitality FA Cup.
Accrington Stanley got the game underway and it didn’t take long for the game to get going with both sides putting in strong tackles and having chances on goal.
With 23 minutes on the clock Tranmere took the lead when the ball rebounded off the post and Anya McCready fired home from close range.
Not content with their lead Tranmere continued to pressure the home side with Rachel Davison troubling the Stanley goal on multiple occasions.
There was 10 minutes remaining in the half when Accrington got an equaliser as their forward closed down Katy Maddock’s clearance and the ball looped in under the crossbar.
Moments later Stanley took the lead after they were awarded a freekick on the halfway line that was looped over the Tranmere defence and fell at the feet of an Accrington Stanley player who knocked into the back of the net.
Rovers got the second half underway and immediately set about getting themselves level with a flurry of attacks but unfortunately, they couldn’t find the breakthrough.
Accrington extended their lead as their free kick was nodded home direct from a corner.
The goal sparked a change for Rovers as Ellie Doyle left the field and was replaced by Laura Pennington who didn’t take long to in pact the game as she clawed back a goal after just five minutes leaving Tranmere needing just one goal to take the game to penalties.
As the game approached stoppage substitute Ionee Jamieson won a penalty for Rovers after being bought down in the box and Laura Pennington calmly slotted the ball past the keeper to bring the game back level.
The tie had 5 additional minutes but neither side could find a breakthrough, so the tie went to a penalty shootout to decide who took a place in the Vitality FA Cup First Round Proper.
Goals from Laura Pennington, Bethan Woolley, Rachel Davison, Rachel Unsworth and a penalty save from Katy Maddock meant Rovers went through to the next round of the cup.
