Curzon Ashton 1-0 Tranmere Rovers Women

9 October 2022

Tranmere Rovers exit the Argyle Sports Kit North West Regional Cup after their first defeat of the season.

Curzon Ashton got the game underway, but it was Rovers who had the first attacking opportunity as they won a freekick that captain Lindsey Smith fired over the bar after 3 minutes.

The home side grew into the game and showed a lot of attacking intent and troubled the Rovers defence with some crosses from wide positions which were well collected by debutant keeper Charlotte Bolland.

With 30 minutes gone Rovers made an enforced change when debutant Alyssa Woods was withdrawn due to injury and replaced by Missy Von Bargen.

The second half went on with both sides going close but with the halftime whistle blown it was goalless at the break.

The opening stages of the second half were a real battle which was thought in the middle of the park.

Curzon Ashton had a flurry of opportunities on the Rovers goal before Ionee Jamieson fired over for Tranmere after she was played into the left channel.

With 20 minutes remaining Rovers forced the Curzon Ashton keeper into a double save with efforts from Ellie Doyle and substitute Elisha Price.

There was another injury blow for Tranmere moments later when Liz Roberts went down under a heavy challenge and was replaced by Jess Durr before Katie Bowers Folan went off injured also and was replaced by another debutant in Natalie Kerrigan.

Curzon Ashton continued to pressure the Tranmere defence but were denied each time by keeper Charlotte Bolland.

The pressure took its toll though and Curzon Ashton found the breakthrough with a long range effort with three minutes of the 90 remaining.

Five minutes of time were added on, but Tranmere couldn’t find the equaliser to force the tie into extra time and exit the cup in Greater Manchester.

Up Next for the women’s team is Fleetwood Town Wrens in the North West Women’s Regional League on the 16th October at Poolfoot 2pm Kick off.
