Match Preview: Carlisle United

28 October 2022

After continuing the unbeaten run in midweek, Rovers face a home clash against Carlisle United next up at Prenton Park.

After two consecutive 1-1 draws against Harrogate Town and Rochdale respectively, it’s now two more home games, firstly against Paul Simpson’s men before facing Stockport County next Tuesday.

The draw on Tuesday night against Rochdale, in which Rovers had to settle for a point despite dominating large parts of the proceedings, extended the unbeaten run to seven games in Sky Bet League Two.

As for the visitors, Carlisle sit 10th in the fourth tier, a place behind Micky Mellon’s side and just two goals less for Simpson’s men separating the two teams.

After going nine league games unbeaten, United have lost their last three games in all competitions and will look to bounce back and get back to their strong form against Rovers on Saturday afternoon.

Team News:

No new injury concerns for Rovers as Micky Mellon has the same selection of players to utlilise.

Paul Huntington could possibly be back fit for Carlisle after missing their last game due to a calf strain.

One to Watch: Owen Moxon

Playing for his hometown club, Owen Moxon has made an impressive start to this season with seven goal contributions in 14 league appearances.

He originally played for United after coming through the ranks with Carlisle but made his breakthrough North of the border.

He had spells with Queen of the South and a loan spell at Gretna before spending five years at Annan Athletic, allotting over 100 appearances.

Since re-signing for Carlisle, he’s picked up three man of the match awards and is enjoying his time back in Sky Bet League Two.

Manager: Paul Simpson

Carlisle born, Simpson is thriving in his second spell in charge at Brunton Park after returning in February 2022.

After taking over the manager role with the club in serious threat of relegation, Simpson turned results around and steered United to safety with a month of the season to go.

His first spell at the club saw him win back-to-back promotions from the conference into League One and make him a very popular figure around the club.

Since his first spell, he’s spent time with clubs such as Preston, Rochdale, Shrewsbury, Stockport as well as winning the World Cup with England Under 20’s in 2017.

Now completing a full circle, he’s back at Carlisle and currently sitting two points off the play-off places, he’ll be looking for even further success.
