Micky Mellon sat down with the local press on Thursday afternoon to preview his side’s trip to Sutton United this weekend
The boss says that his team are currently “in a good place” in terms of both results and development.
“Through the team we’re growing all of the time and they’ll get better all of the time. I’m enjoying watching the players develop because we’re pushing them and pushing them to see how far we can push them to be the best that they can be.
“We’re in a good place. Development is fine and people love development at the start but I understand that you’ve got to get results and if you can get results whilst developing then it can buy the group time to build on that.
“At the minute, we’re winning games of football and building on their development by doing that because they’re still relatively inexperienced players but I’m excited by it.”
After three consecutive league wins, including two away from home, Micky was questioned on whether the two away games in particular have given his players more confidence.
“It was always going to be about players doing good things well. We haven’t changed what we’re trying to do, it’s just more about us doing it well and doing it consistently well.
“We’ve changed the shape a little bit but in terms of the principals of how we want to play, we’re just doing that better and becoming consistently good players up until now. We’ve got to keep that going.
“Sutton is a really tough place to go. They make you defend at every opportunity that they can so you’ve got to be at it for the whole game. If you make any mistakes, they’re likely to punish you.
“We’ve been down there recently and done well and we know what the asks of the game will be so if we can defend well, we know we’ve got quality players who can punish them at the other end. I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
Micky also provided an injury update ahead of Saturday’s game.
“Everyone is pretty much how we ended Tuesday, we didn’t lose anyone from that game. There isn’t anyone new coming back. Tom Davies, Charlie Jolley and Joel Mumbongo are all still out. Luke Robinson is having an operation on his ankle.”
