Tranmere Rovers suffer their second league defeat of the season after a trip to Salford.
Rovers were forced into an early change when Rachel Davison pulled up with a hamstring injury and was replaced by Nat Kerrigan after just six minutes.
Laura Pennington had the first chance of the game for Rovers but was denied by some good Salford City defending.
Salford opened the scoring when their number 6 latched onto a through ball, rounded keeper Katy Maddock and slotted home. Shortly after Salford doubled their lead and Rovers had some work to do to get the game back under control.
Tranmere managed to get a goal back after Laura Pennington was brought down in the box and calmly slotted the ball past the Salford Keeper.
Just before the whistle went for half time Salford extended their lead as the number 9 looped the ball over Maddock to make the score line 3-1.
Half time saw two changes as Alyssa Woods and Kiah Sullivan made way for the young duo of Keris McRoberts and Jess Durr.
Those changes sparked new life into Tranmere and moments into the half Pennington went close again before efforts from Katie Bowers Folan and Elisha Price troubled the Salford goal.
Salford’s number 9 found herself in again but was denied by a brilliant tackle by Nat Kerrigan before Anya McCready went close down the other end after great play by Bowers Folan and substitute Ellie Doyle.
Minutes later it was 4-1 when Salford’s number 9 weaved her way through the Tranmere defence and finished into the corner for her second of the afternoon.
Three minutes later a mistake from Salford’s keeper gifted the ball to Pennington who looped the ball into the net from distance and suddenly there appeared to be a lifeline for Tranmere.
As the clock ticked into stoppage time Laura Pennington was brought down by the Salford keeper and Tranmere were awarded a second penalty of the afternoon. Pennington stepped up again but agonisingly her penalty went over the bar with the last kick off the game and Tranmere suffered back to back league defeats.
