It was a good day at the office as Tranmere Rovers took on Mancunian Unity in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup.
It was a fast paced start to the game and inside the first minute Mancunian Unity had a shot on the Tranmere goal well saved by Keeper Katy Maddock before Laura Pennington went close for Tranmere moments later.
For the second game running Tranmere took the lead in the 10th minute this time it was Bethan Woolley who got the opening goal when she followed up Rachel Davison’s effort that was parried away by the Unity goalkeeper.
Three minutes later it was two nil to Rovers when Laura Pennington’s shot was deflected past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
Tranmere had an enforced change when Elisha Price was replaced by Katie Bowers Folan.
With the half starting to wind down Rovers struck a quick fire double firstly through Rachel Davison who pounced on a lose ball and fired passed the keeper and then last weeks hattrick hero Anya McCready got her name on the scoresheet when she finished off a lovely Rovers move.
The second half got underway with a lot of attacking intent again and with five minutes gone in the second half Davison had her second and Rovers fifth with a crisp right footed effort inside the penalty area.
After Tranmere’s fifth the game became a real battle in the midfield with strong challenges going in from both teams and on 65 minutes Unity pulled a goal back with a strike of their own from inside the penalty area.
Ten minutes later Tranmere put the game beyond doubt when the Mancunian Unity goalkeeper parried yet another Rovers shot across goal and into the path of first half substitute Katie Bowers Folan who tapped in from close range.
Tranmere continued to press the Unity defence and went close with a couple more chances before the end of the game.
The fulltime whistle blew at the Ellesmere Port Sports Village and Tranmere Rovers were in the hat for the next round of the FA Cup after a hard thought victory over Mancunian Unity.
Up Next for the women’s team is Curzon Ashton away in the Argyle Sports Kit North West Regional Cup on the 9th October at the Tameside Stadium 2pm Kick off.
