TRIC hold boxing workshop with former Commonwealth champion Courtney Fry at Beechwood

31 October 2022

Tranmere Rovers in the Community held a boxing taster session with 1998 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Courtney Fry at Beechwood Recreation Centre last Friday, as the former boxer spoke to the children about the benefits of channelling their energies into sport.

The children were taught boxing skills by Sydney 2000 Olympian Fry, who also spoke to them about how boxing helped divert him down a better path in life and how sport can help them follow his footsteps in doing so.

The event, supported by Onward and Safer Neighbourhoods, linked in with crime prevention work TRIC have been doing in partnership with Wirral Police by holding diversionary events during half term.

The visit from Fry was one of many successful events going on at Beechwood Recreation Centre of recent.

Fry said of the event: "The children engaged really well. My taster sessions are all based around boxing and resilience, not giving up, trying their hardest, and working together as a team.

"As a kid, I was really lost but sometimes I got bored and I needed something to attract me. Sport is one of the main things that does it for you. I believe that most of these kids have felt some sort of enjoyment, and it's that sort of enjoyment which will get them back here, and want to excel in what they're doing."

Keep an eye out on our social media channels in the coming days for a full interview with Courtney and more content from the event.
