Match Preview: Walsall

23 September 2022

After a midweek penalty shootout victory over League One side Bolton Wanderers, Tranmere return to league action with a trip to Walsall on Saturday afternoon.

It’s the first league game since Rovers got back to winning ways with a 1-0 away win over Salford City at the Peninsula Stadium thanks to a strike from Josh Hawkes in the first half.

With a much needed away win and clean sheet, it’s something Rovers will look to build on as they’re back on their travels to the Bescot Stadium.

As for the hosts, after winning their opening two games of the season against Hartlepool and Newport County respectively, the Sadlers have struggled to pick up results since then, without a single win in all competitions since 9th August.

Team News:

Kieron Morris got 45 minutes under his belt in midweek and came out of that unscathed.

Kyle Jameson and Luke Robinson both returned to training this week and may be in contention to feature on the bench if required.

Tom Davies, Charlie Jolley and Joel Mumbongo remain sidelined.

One to Watch: Danny Johnson

At the age of 29, Danny Johnson picked up experience in non-league and aboard before making the jump into the football league with Cardiff. He played four games for Tranmere as part of a short loan spell before spending the rest of that campaign at Stevenage.

In 2015, he signed for Gateshead in a move which lasted thee years where he made over 100 appearances. He then spent a couple of seasons in Scotland before moving back South of the border with Leyton Orient.

Now a Mansfield player on loan at Walsall, he’s made an impressive start to the season in front of goal, already scoring six goals in nine League Two games this campaign.

Manager: Michael Flynn

Appointed head coach in February earlier this year, he’d spent four-and-a-half years as Newport County manager, reaching the League Two play-off finals twice with his hometown club.

His playing career lasted just short of two decades with his longest spells coming at Bradford City and three respective spells with Newport.

He moved straight into management with Newport after retiring in 2018, where he saw some brilliant and successful times at Rodney Parade before moving to Walsall. His first game in charge of the Sadlers saw them end Forest Green Rovers 19-game unbeaten run with a 1-0 away win.

He finished the season with a 16th-placed finish but after a poor month last month, he’ll be looking to get Walsall back on track with a home contest with Micky Mellon’s side.
