Hughes eager to finish season strongly

28 April 2023

Tranmere Rovers midfielder Rhys Hughes is eager to finish his first season at the club strongly, having enjoyed his recent breakthrough into the first-team.

Hughes and his team-mates are back on their travels this weekend when they visit AFC Wimbledon in Sky Bet League Two on Saturday afternoon, which is Rovers’ final away game of the season.

And Hughes, 21, who scored an excellent free-kick in Rovers’ 2-0 home win over Grimsby Town at Prenton Park last time out, is pleased to be making a contribution to Ian Dawes’ side having started the calendar year on loan at National League North outfit Chester.

Hughes said: “We’ve got to finish the season strongly, there’s always something to play for in football, the fans are still turning up to games, you’ve got to play your best, whether that be the first game or last couple of games in the season.

“We’re working hard to give ourselves the best chance to go out there and perform, whatever system it is you just have to do your best and see what happens.

“It’s been really good, I had a good loan at Chester, and it really helped me at the time, but I’m happy to be back at Tranmere and since I’ve come back I’ve been playing quite regularly, so hopefully we can finish the season strong.

“This season was about getting used to men’s football, as coming from an academy is quite different, so it’s helped me a lot to compete.

“You have got to adapt your game to what you are playing against, I feel I did that well at Chester and I’m doing it here as well.

“Next season, it’s about kicking on, I can really prepare in the summer and get as fit as I can during pre-season. The run-in towards the end of the season has helped me as well, to get used to it, so hopefully next season I can get as many games as I can and to help this club."
