Jake Leake: “We had the chance to make a statement and did that”

16 August 2023

Tranmere Rovers defender Jake Leake praised his side’s ‘killer instinct’ in their 3-0 victory over Harrogate Town and said that the performance ‘had been coming’.

"It's been coming in the last few weeks. We've had the performance, but tonight we had that killer instinct and that showed in the scoreline and the result.”

Leake said that the early two-goal advantage played a massive part in Rovers ultimately getting the victory.

“It’s always nice to get a good start. On Saturday we didn’t do that, and that’s why we ultimately lost the game. We gave ourselves too much to do.

"That was a big thing going into tonight’s game to get a good start, we did that and we pushed on from there.

“The main message at half-time was to keep on them. We knew we had a chance to make a little bit of a statement tonight after the first two games and I think we did that.

“We closed out their attack quite well, just stopped it from source. Definitely, when we were going forward we were all set up ready for their counter-attack and that’s probably one of their main threats.”
