Match Preview | Harrogate Town (H)

14 August 2023

Tranmere Rovers host Harrogate Town this Tuesday evening (7.45pm kick-off) as they look to bounce back from defeat at MK Dons on Saturday.

Ian Dawes’ side were unlucky not to grab a point in Milton Keynes at the weekend, after a second-half performance which yielded many a chance to equalise.

The return to fitness of Luke Norris has provided a focal point for Rovers up front, and substitute performances from the likes of Connor Jennings and Kristian Dennis gave the team a lift in the second period on Saturday.

In our third league game of the season, Rovers entertain Harrogate, who beat Doncaster Rovers 1-0 away from home in their first game and were beaten 1-0 at home by Forest Green on Saturday.

Those results for Tuesday’s visitors were either side of a 1-0 Carabao Cup victory over Carlisle United.

Team news:

Ian Dawes has gone into the first few games of the season with a fully-fit squad, and should do so for this one also.

Harvey Saunders limped off with a knock during Saturday’s game, so will be assessed at The Campus ahead of the game.

One to watch: Jack Muldoon

34-year-old forward Muldoon has reached a double-figure goal return in six seasons in professional football after quitting his job as a plasterer to join Rochdale in 2014.

The Scunthorpe-born striker netted 15 League Two goals in the 2020/21 season and 12 the following campaign with Harrogate, and has been with the Club since 2018 after leaving AFC Fylde.

In his first two seasons with Harrogate in the National League, Muldoon netted 15 and 16 goals respectively.

Last season, Muldoon notched up four goals and five assists, and already has a goal to his name this campaign after scoring the winner from the spot at Doncaster on the opening day.

Manager: Simon Weaver

After beginning his playing career with Sheffield Wednesday, Weaver was well-travelled on the non-league circuit as a centre-back.

Now 45-year-old Weaver began his managerial career with Harrogate as player-coach in 2009 before being appointed manager in 2011.

The Doncaster-born gaffer has been with the Club ever since, leading them from sixth-tier struggles to maintaining their League Two status since promotion from the National League in 2020.

Weaver led Harrogate to FA Trophy success in 2021, playing the postponed 2020 final behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic where they defeated Concord Rangers 1-0 at Wembley.
