Match Preview: Salford City (H)

18 August 2023

Tranmere Rovers are at home again this Saturday as we face Salford City (3pm), looking to secure back-to-back wins after victory on Tuesday night.

A quickfire first-half double from Luke Norris and Sam Taylor was followed in the second half by a late strike from Kieron Morris as Rovers swept aside Harrogate Town.

Salford suffered a 2-0 defeat at Grimsby Town on Tuesday evening following an early second-half dismissal for Ossama Ashley.

The Ammies started their season with a 2-0 win at Forest Green Rovers, before knocking Preston North End out of the Carabao Cup on penalties after a 2-2 draw. They drew again last Saturday, 1-1 at home to Crawley Town.

Team news:

Harvey Saunders is unavailable after suffering an ankle injury against Milton Keynes Dons, but will be back in full training in the coming weeks.

Charlie Jolley received his first minutes of the league season on Tuesday night against Harrogate and could be in line for a place in the squad.

One to watch: Conor McAleny

Former Everton forward McAleny already has two goals in three league games this season, netting in Salford’s victory over Forest Green on the opening day as well as the equaliser against Crawley last weekend.

The 31-year-old netted 11 League Two goals last season and has been with the Club since Summer 2021 after leaving Oldham Athletic.

While at Everton, McAleny took in loan spells at the likes of Brentford, Cardiff City and Wigan Athletic before moving on to Fleetwood Town where he spent three years prior to joining Oldham.

Head Coach: Neil Wood

40-year-old Salford head coach Neil Wood is currently in his first senior managerial post, previously coaching youth sides at Manchester United from 2014 to 2022.

In 2019, Wood was promoted to the role of Manchester United under-23 manager. In this role, he oversaw the first-team debuts of 17 academy players.

The Stretford-born boss replaced Gary Bowyer at Salford in May 2022, and has since overseen 27 victories in his 61 games in charge.
