Tranmere Rovers 2-1 Cheadle Town Stingers

21 August 2023

Tranmere Rovers Women get their new season underway with a vital three points after a victory over Cheadle Town Stingers.

Goals from Amy Shannon and Ellie Doyle were the difference on Sunday afternoon in Tranmere Rovers Women's open fixture.

The initial phases of the match were evenly matched, with both teams having opportunities.

The team that emerged victorious had a near miss in terms of scoring first.

Williams attempted a curled shot towards the upper corner, but Size managed to get a touch on it, redirecting it over the crossbar.

Shortly after that, Cheadle found the net with an Ogden free kick, leading to a chaotic goal line situation and an own goal by Rovers.

Holly Jones, a recent addition to the team, came close to scoring when she earned a free kick just outside the box. However, her attempt was saved by Inford.

Persistently pressing forward, Rovers continued to apply pressure and were quickly rewarded. Doyle received a pass from Bowers Folan, skilfully manoeuvred through the midfield, and then set up Shannon to elegantly control the ball and place it into the upper corner of the goal.

The visitors came close once again early in the first half, with Nadine Ruddock breaking through onto the ball. However, her shot missed narrowly, allowing Rovers to stay in contention.

Shortly afterwards, Tranmere earned a penalty when Katie Bowers Folan was brought down in the box. Taking the penalty kick, Bowers Folan aimed to the right, but the goalkeeper managed to make a save despite being off her line. The referee let play continue.

In the second half, Rovers took control, creating numerous opportunities, yet failing to convert and take the lead.

But the breakthrough came when Tranmere was granted another penalty, this time after Doyle was fouled inside the penalty area. Doyle confidently sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, smashing the ball into the net, giving Rovers a well-earned lead.

Despite Cheadle's attempts to challenge the backline, the defenders held strong and prevented them from equalising.

As the final whistle sounded, Tranmere Rovers Women secured a crucial three points to kick off their 2023/24 season on the right note.
