Match Preview | Walsall (A)

15 December 2023

Tranmere Rovers take their good form on the road to Walsall this Saturday, 16th December (3pm kick-off).

Nigel Adkins’ side are unbeaten in their last five league matches and saw off Newport County 2-1 last weekend thanks to Connor Jennings’ 88th minute goal.

Opponents Walsall are 16th in League Two but picked up their first win in seven games on Saturday, 2-1 against Notts County at Meadow Lane.

Just three points separate Rovers in 21st and the Saddlers, marking a big opportunity for both sides to push up the table.

Team news:

Every player in the squad trained on Thursday, except for Luke Norris who is recovering from ankle surgery.

Paul Lewis and Joe Starbuck are back involved with the group but aren’t quite ready to return to match action.

One to watch: Oisin McEntee

Oisin McEntee’s crucial brace against Notts County helped Walsall end their disappointing run of form in the league that has seen them fall to 16th.

The 22-year-old isn’t associated with his goalscoring, but this season has played higher up than usual, growing into a role in the centre of midfield after previously playing in defence.

He has contributed five goals this season in all competitions, as well as four assists and a consistent run of displays in the heart of the pitch.

The Irishman joined the youth setup at Newcastle United when he was 16, captaining their under-18 side. He represented his country at the under-17 European Championship in 2018.

Manager: Mat Sadler

38-year-old Sadler is in his first managerial role at Walsall, the Club he ended his career with in 2022.

He played for the Saddlers twice, firstly between 2011-2012 and then from 2019 until his retirement.

Sadler took over at the Poundland Bescot Stadium at the end of last season as interim boss, before being offered the role permanently in May.
