Match Report: Tranmere Rovers 2-1 Newport County

9 December 2023

Tranmere Rovers made it five games unbeaten with victory at home to Newport, thanks to a late goal from Connor Jennings.

The first chance of the game fell to Jennings in the fifth minute after Lee O’Connor’s ball down the right flank found the run of Rob Apter, who delivered a cross onto the head of Jennings, but the shot was wide.

Rovers went even closer three minutes later when Kieron Morris’ cross across goal was almost nodded in by a couple of diving Tranmere heads, as they continued to test Newport’s resolve.

The visitors’ first chance came after 14 minutes when Omar Bogle forced a save out of Luke McGee from a central position in the box, before the rebound was blasted wide.

Newport grew into the game, Bogle having another couple of sights of goal as the half wore on, but his penalty appeals after a challenge from Tom Davies were waved away before his side were caught offside on another move.

County then forged ahead on 22 minutes when Will Evans latched onto a knockdown from a free-kick into the box to poke home.

The momentum of the game then swung back to Rovers, who kept their visitors penned back with extended spells of possession, searching for an equaliser.

Davies glanced a header onto the top of the bar from a corner approaching half time, as Tranmere continued to knock on the door.

Morris was controversially booked for diving on the edge of the box on the stroke of the break, which Rovers ultimately went into one down.

After the Rovers pressure continued into the second half, Kieron Morris struck home the equaliser on 57 minutes in front of the Kop.

Tranmere almost went ahead shortly after when Brad Walker’s corner into the post was cleared off the line.

Morris was incredibly close to a second on 74 minutes when his effort from range rattled the crossbar, before the visitors went up the other end and hit the opposite crossbar.

That aforementioned Rovers pressure continued for the vast majority of the second period, and intensified as the men in white got closer to another goal, Walker striking the woodwork next with a whipped cross.

Rovers found the winner with two minutes to go, Connor Jennings tapping home after some intense Rovers pressure in the visitors’ box, and held on for a massive three points.
