Match Preview: Stevenage

24 February 2023

Tranmere Rovers look to bounce back from a disappointing defeat last weekend against Mansfield Town, as the whites visit Stevenage in Sky Bet League Two.

A defeat on Saturday afternoon at home to Mansfield Town by two goals to nil means that Micky Mellon’s side focus their attention to Stevenage this weekend.

It’s a pivotal game for both sides, particularly at this stage of the Sky Bet League Two season – with Rovers looking to climb into play-offs, and the hosts looking to strengthen their place in the automatic promotion positions.

Stevenage come into the game on the back of a defeat against Stockport County, 2-0, last week. Without a win in 3 games, Stevenage are looking to turn this form around to strengthen their promotion bid.

Tranmere have come out on top of 27% of fixtures against Stevenage since the first meeting between the two sides in 2011 – winning 4 and drawing 6 of the 15 games.

The most recent meeting between the two clubs was a 2-1 defeat at Prenton Park last summer.

Stevenage have had great home form so far this season, winning 12 and drawing 1 out of 15 at the Lamex Stadium.

One To Watch: Luke Norris

Luke Norris is a 29-year-old forward, who currently plays for Saturday’s visitors, his home town club.

He started his career at Luton Town back in 2001 at the Academy, and then arrived at Brentford Academy in 2010.

He signed his first pro-deal at ‘the Bees’ in 2011, but made just 3 appearances for the First Team in 3 years at the club.

He enjoyed loans at Boreham Wood, Dagenham and Redbridge and Northampton Town, before signing a permanent deal at Gillingham.

He played 70 times for Gillingham, scoring 14, before going to Swindon Town and scoring 17 in 74 games across a 2-year spell.

He then spent 3 years, through COVID, at Colchester United, scoring 20 in 83 games. He arrived at the Lamex in 2021 and is just 6 appearances from the century.

The Manager: Steve Evans

Steve Evans has had an unbelievable management career, with numerous teams being managed by Evans.

He played as a striker for Scottish clubs in a playing career between 1979 and 1986 at the likes of Clyde, Albion Rovers, Ayr United, Hamilton Academical and St. Johnstone.

He later took his first step into management back in 1994 at Stamford, before spells at Boston United across 2 spells between 1998 and 2007.

He got his first football league job in 2007 at Crawley Town where he was in the hot seat for 5 years, before a 3-year spell at Rotherham.

He managed at Leeds United for the 15-16 season before taking the step down to lower down in the EFL, at Mansfield Town.

He has also managed Peterborough United and Gillingham, and joined Stevenage last season.

He has managed 1,139 professional games, winning 485 and drawing 313, with a win percentage of 42.6%.
