Micky wanting to see more tempo

10 February 2023

Tranmere Rovers manager Micky Mellon is looking forward to Saturday’s Sky Bet League Two fixture against Salford City at Prenton Park and hopes his side can replicate their last home performance.

Rovers return to their home ground after two consecutive away games at Stockport County and Doncaster Rovers for the first time since beating league leaders Leyton Orient 1-0 last month.

And speaking in his pre-match press conference, Micky gave his thoughts on the fixture awaiting them ahead of the visit of Neil Wood’s Ammies.

Mellon said: "We're looking forward to the game. Everyone who comes to Tranmere expects the team to perform and I’m sure that Salford will. We're looking forward to the game and getting back on the pitch, we're looking forward to looking like ourselves again.

“We want to see more tempo and more powerful running and fast-paced passing, so we’re looking forward to trying to get back to that against Salford at the weekend.

“We’ll put out a Tranmere team that can represent the Club properly.

“Everyone is very tight and there's nothing much that determines who wins the games. We're disappointed because we saw the opportunity to close that gap. We can't dwell on it because we have to move on now. We have to put it into training and do the things that we do well.

“You look at the Leyton Orient win and you can see what we’re all about, we need the consistency to put in a performance like that and try and replicate it all of the time, so we’ll expect to do that at the weekend and try and win games to push us up the table.

"We're always disappointed that we're not winning games. Saturday at Stockport we played well and felt like we deserved something out of it. On Tuesday we never looked like ourselves and lacked the imagination needed to open people up. I expect us to be more of ourselves.

"You've got to remember what it takes to put a performance in. We will expect to do that on the weekend and keep trying to win games.

"Since the start of the season we have built a way of playing that we think suits this group to try and win games so it’s about building on it or reminding the players of the way we are trying to play to pick up points. It's more of the bigger picture than just one game. Against Leyton Orient it came together for one 90 minutes and that’s what the overall plan is.

“You’ve seen against Leyton Orient, if we hit those levels then we are a match for anybody.

"You've got to remember what it takes to put a performance in. We will expect to do that on the weekend and keep trying to win games.”
