Micky's thoughts on Stevenage test

24 February 2023

Tranmere Rovers manager Micky Mellon expects a tough fixture away at Stevenage in Sky Bet League Two on Saturday, but believes his side can produce a positive performance.

Rovers head to Hertfordshire this weekend where Steve Evans’ second-placed Boro await at the Lamex Stadium.

And Micky sat down with the local media to preview TRFC’s trip south in his pre-match press conference.

Mellon said: “They are all tough. Anybody in this division can beat anybody. There isn’t really a big gap, the gaps will always come from consistency but on any given day, anybody can beat anybody.

“We understand what Stevenage’s strengths are and quite simply we’ve got to stamp our individual or collective personality to go and be the best version of us. We’ll have to be relentless and keep believing that we can go out there and go and score goals and keep clean sheets, and that’s something we will look to do again.

“We have executed some fantastic performances before but we have to make sure the consistency levels are where you aren’t losing too many games. The teams that will be at the top are the ones who will be less inconsistent, and that’s what we’ve tried to get to, we’ve got to find the levels of consistency to be successful.

“We’re trying to get the best out of this young group, and I’m very level-headed on that, and keep that drive and focus as the manager.

“The players know I’m there to keep the standards high and to show best practice in games and how to get clean sheets and I just completely focus on what I can control and that’s trying to get the players to a level of consistency of defending and attacking which gives us a good chance of winning games of football.

“I’m always here for the players and the Football Club and the supporters to try and get the best out of this group as I possibly can and we need to express that and keep improving.

“We need to get a response from the players and get them to a place where they don’t make those mistakes and think clearer, to win games.

“It’s a game of football, we’ve got to learn and get that consistency. We’re at the stage of the season where the players know that and we want to seriously win but as the manager I’ve got to make sure they think clearer, practice that during the week in training, then move onto Saturday and try to get a result.

“We have to have better performances in the key moments when we receive the ball, we have to be more clinical about our game plan without complicating it and going delivering the quality that is needed, we practice that all the time for that to come together, but what we can do as coaches and managers is encourage the players to get more out of them.”

Mellon provided an update on team-news heading into Rovers’ next fixture on the road.

He added: “There’s still a lot of them injured, but what I will say is it gives people opportunities to come in and play so when the opportunity comes to play, they’ll play and must raise their levels to move Tranmere forward. With Jordan Turnbull and Kane Hemmings, these lads are important players who are out, you’ve got to help the lads coming in, and I’ll give them the encouragement and then we’ll go to Stevenage with the best team we think possible to try and get a result.”
