Saunders pleased with winning debut

30 January 2023

Harvey Saunders was pleased to mark his debut at Tranmere Rovers with a winning start, as Micky Mellon’s men beat league leaders Leyton Orient 1-0 at Prenton Park on Saturday.

Forward Saunders, who joined TRFC last week on an undisclosed fee from Bristol Rovers, played 67 minutes in his first appearance for the club.

And following the three points, Saunders, 25, discussed his start to life at Tranmere and his hopes for the rest of the Sky Bet League Two season.

Saunders said: “It was brilliant. Three points any week is great but to do it against the top of the league as well, it just felt that little bit better.

“I drove up at 5am on Friday morning, got all the paperwork done and trained with the lads. I’m trying to get used to how everyone plays here and getting that connection with everyone, Kane was brilliant up top, so it’s learning how people like to play.

“It’s a big club and as soon as I knew about it, I wanted to come here straight away and I’m happy to be here.

“Hopefully when the lads learn what I’m like, and I learn what they are more like, then there will be more of that, it’s taking each day as it comes and getting those partnerships going.

“It’s minutes on the pitch so I was never going to complain about that, but I thought the lads were brilliant, especially defensively, we held on well at the end and got that goal.

“I’ve got lads around me with pace around me who are going to get up the pitch, it’s just my job to get in the box and finish the chances.

“If we get a run of games going, with the squad and the team we have got we can put a run together hopefully.”

Saunders was impressed with the support from the SWA at Prenton Park, and he believes home backing is always vital.

He added: “It’s a massive help, especially when you have got fans like that and the fans do help massively like that, and it’s great to have that backing.”
