Defender Joe Yarney signs one-year contract with Rovers

21 July 2023

Tranmere Rovers are delighted to confirm the signing of defender Joe Yarney on a one-year contract.

The centre-back has impressed during a trial with Ian Dawes’ squad during pre-season and his signing will bolster the manager’s defensive options heading into the new campaign.

The Liverpool born 25-year-old began his youth career with Everton before moving to Newcastle United and then to Chesterfield.  He has made 147 senior appearances, mostly for the Spireites.

After a year playing in India, Joe joined Oldham last season where he won the supporters’ Player of the Year award.

Manager Ian Dawes said: "Joe is a player we’ve been monitoring last season while at Oldham where he had a great season in winning their supporters' Player of the Season award.

"He has been training with us this last week while we reached an agreement with him to sign. Since coming in he has impressed not just staff but players also.

"At 25 years of age, he should be coming into his peak playing years and still has scope to develop further.

"He has great qualities as a player and character. He played 90 minutes against Rochdale, so his fitness levels are excellent as well for this stage of pre-season. We’re pleased to be able to sign him up for this season and improve competition in the defensive area.”

On signing for Rovers, Joe commented: “I’m really happy to get it done. I’ve known the gaffer and some of the staff for about a year or two, so it was very welcoming and it’s a good setup here. I’m looking forward to the season ahead.

“The staff, players and fans want to push for promotion and it is exciting to me as a player to be part of trying to make that happen.”
