Match Report: Tranmere Rovers 0-2 Rochdale AFC

18 July 2023

Ian Dawes’ side got another 90 minutes under their belts on Tuesday afternoon in a behind-closed-doors pre-season friendly with Rochdale.

Rovers put the pressure on straight away as a smart move resulted in Regan Hendry teeing up Josh Hawkes for a shot which was saved down low.

Sam Taylor put in a lively performance, regularly stretching the visitors’ back line. The striker had the ball in the back of the net on 16 minutes but the referee pulled play back for an offside.

Tom Davies had a chance from a corner shortly after, catching the ball sweet on the volley, but his shot was just wide.

Rochdale grew into the game and sent a threatening ball over the Rovers defence midway through the first period, but Luke McGee was quick off his line to deal with the danger.

Rochdale won a penalty on the half-hour mark following a foul in the box from Jordan Turnbull, which Tyrese Sinclair converted to edge his side into the lead.

McGee was called into action again shortly after, parrying clear a corner before Kieron Morris was sent on the break, but the winger’s cross wasn’t met.

Rovers won a free-kick on the edge of the box shortly before half time, but Regan Hendry’s shot was blocked by the wall.

Hendry linked up nicely with Taylor on several occasions in the second period, with the Scot sending in a pinpoint cross towards the Education Hub graduate five minutes into the half which was turned around for a corner.

The visitors tested Rovers’ defence throughout the second half, but Dawes’ side held their shape well to limit them to few chances.

Rochdale grabbed a second goal on 75 minutes, however, Devante Rodney sliding the ball past Joe Murphy to double his side’s lead.

Dawes rung the changes in the second half, with three players from The Education Hub making an appearance for Rovers.

Rhys Hughes proved a handful for the Dale defence after coming on as a substitute, sending several threatening crosses into the box for his teammates.

Joe Murphy produced a couple of smart saves in the latter stages of the game to keep the scores at 2-0 at full time.
