Match Report: Vauxhall Motors 0-0 Tranmere Rovers

8 July 2023

Tranmere Rovers’ first run-out of pre-season resulted in a goalless draw at Vauxhall Motors, in torrential second-half conditions at The VanEupen Arena.

Luke McGee was called into a couple of early stops on his first appearance in a Rovers shirt, providing a calming influence at the back among some early home pressure.

Vauxhall threatened with a couple of set pieces as the game progressed, but Tom Davies was on hand to clear the danger on a couple of occasions.

Rovers looked to start some moves of their own after absorbing some early pressure, Mikey Davies looking to play Josh Hawkes in behind before the winger was called offside.

Tranmere were then forced into some defensive work, as Mikey Davies and his namesake Tom slid in for a couple of perfectly timed challenges.

Luke McGee was then forced into an acrobatic save, tipping the ball behind for a corner.

Just short of half time, Rovers had the best chance of the game to that point as Josh Hawkes tiptoed past his defender in the box to unleash an effort which was blocked well by the Vauxhall defence, and it was goalless at the break.

Entering for the second period, Kristian Dennis had a great chance on goal in his first moments in a Rovers shirt but his shot inside the box was just wide of the mark.

Kane Hemmings had a couple of chances as the conditions descended into torrential rain, but couldn’t quite convert.

Dennis and Hemmings combined shortly after to send Taylor in on goal but the forward was thwarted by the stubborn Vauxhall defence.

Rhys Hughes raced down the right before unleashing a shot on goal as the game progressed, but the Vauxhall defence stood firm and it was deflected behind.

Ultimately, the game ended goalless at both sides got crucial pre-season minutes under their respective belts.
