Joe Murphy signs new one-year contract

26 June 2023

Tranmere Rovers are delighted to confirm that goalkeeper Joe Murphy has signed a new one-year contract with the Club which will see him stay on as both a member of the playing squad and our goalkeeping coach for the 2023/24 season.

Joe has made 39 appearances since re-joining the Club in 2020, including seven in our last campaign as he put in some assured displays on his return to the side.

The 41-year-old keeper first played for Tranmere between 1998 and 2002, reaching the League Cup final in 2000 as the Whites lost out to Leicester City at Wembley Stadium.

Manager Ian Dawes said: “I'm really pleased Joe is staying with us.  As well as using his vast experience for keeper coaching, he also showed last season that he is still more than capable of stepping in if needed.  We will be looking to bring in a new first team keeper, and I am sure Joe will be an asset in helping them to settle in and develop."

Joe Murphy added: “I love being at Tranmere so I'm delighted to be staying for another year.  With the signings that we’ve brought in, it’s an exciting time for the Club and I'm looking forward to playing my part in making sure that Tranmere's defence is solid.

"I really enjoyed it last year, it was obviously my first year coaching and I loved it, so for me to go again was a no-brainer to be honest.”
