TRIC’s Walking Football team raise money for life-saving defibrillator at local community centre

28 June 2023

Tranmere Rovers in the Community’s over-65s Walking Football team recently raised over £1,000 to purchase a life-saving defibrillator for a local community centre after one of the team was revived while suffering a heart attack.

A cheque for £1,050 was presented to representatives from New Ferry after fundraising efforts from TRIC, as well as regulars from the Wirral Hundred public house and the Tranmere Geriatrics.

John Hooley, part of our over-65s Walking Football group, suffered a heart attack while playing football at New Ferry Village Hall back in November.

His teammates were able to revive him using the hall’s defibrillator before an ambulance arrived, so the team then decided to raise money to buy another defibrillator for the community.

Prenton Park Recreation Centre, where the team play weekly for our sessions, is also equipped with a defibrillator.

Danny Quinlan, also of our over-65s Walking Football group, told the Wirral Globe: “It’s a magnificent piece of kit.

"We decided there and then as a team that we would try to raise money to buy another defibrillator for the Windsor Close Community Centre in New Ferry which is linked with the village hall.

“They were really over the moon.”

If you or someone you know would be interested in joining the group at any of our Walking Football sessions, please contact us via Community@tranmererovers.co.uk.
