Hawkes has belief for the run in

10 March 2023

Josh Hawkes believes Tranmere Rovers can put a run of wins together following two victories in their last three games, ahead of a trip to Gillingham in Sky Bet League Two on Saturday afternoon.

Micky Mellon’s men are back in action down in Kent, and awaiting them at Priestfield are Neil Harris’ improving Gills outfit.

And winger Hawkes previewed Rovers’ next game in his pre-match press conference.

Hawkes said: “We know that we need to put a run of wins together. There’s 11 games to go now. We need to get a lot of wins in those games to push us up the table, we’ve got seven points out of nine over a tough week, and it’s important at this stage of the season to get wins.

“I think we’re creating opportunities. When we’re on top of games we need to be more clinical. We’re getting into the right areas on the pitch, it’s just putting those chances away, so we’re working on them in training.

“We’ll be going to Gillingham trying to get the three points. The teams down the bottom, they have a squad that shouldn’t really be down there, it will be a tough game but I’m sure we can hopefully get the win.

“We need to keep the composure in games to take chances when they come, as confidence is a massive thing.

“We needed the break, the Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday games can be tough with the amount of games we had, it was good to get back on the training pitch and work on what we need to get better at.

“It’s good to have that time together to improve on what we need to, and it’s about forming connections and spending time with each other.

“At the start of the season, I don’t like to set myself targets but I’d like to get to double figures in goals, and hopefully I can get a few more until the end of the season and help the team, whether that be goals or assists.

“We’ve still got a lot to learn, we have a young group that’s still learning, but I feel I’m contributing  a lot more than what I have done in the past, and I want to keep improving.”
