Lewis aiming to continue recent wins

3 March 2023

Paul Lewis hopes that Tranmere Rovers’ recent winning run can continue when Hartlepool United visit Prenton Park on Saturday afternoon.

Micky Mellon’s men have been buoyed by recent back-to-back victories over Stevenage and Crawley Town in Sky Bet League Two, ahead of this weekend’s fixture.

And Paul sat down with the local press to preview Rovers next game in the fourth-tier.

Lewis said: “We needed the two good wins, a long trip away and a game so soon on Tuesday, so it was good to get the two wins.

“It was quite a physical game against Stevenage and sometimes you just have to dig in and get the win, and that’s what we managed to do, and it was a scrappy game on Tuesday but we got the job done.

“We’ve got to just look forward to Saturday only and take it game-by-game, anything can happen, we’ve got to focus on just getting the three points and see where it takes us.

“They were important wins. There are still 12 games left so there’s quite a lot of points that are up for grabs, so in the next game on Saturday we have to go in with the right attitude so if we can carry on doing what we are doing but add more of our quality, we’ll be up there.”

Awaiting Rovers are a Hartlepool outfit now managed under John Askey following his recent appointment by the North East club – with Pools coming back from a two-goal deficit to draw 3-3 at home to Walsall last time out.

The scorer of Hartlepool’s added time equaliser was scored by former TRFC favourite Connor Jennings, and Lewis expects a tough clash against a side who are two points above the relegation places.

He added: “It can play hard when you play against teams who are fighting for your lives, it doesn’t matter who you play, the league is quite similar in terms of standard, and if we play anyway near our best we’ve got a good chance of winning.

“They will be fighting and giving everything they have got to stay in this league.”
