Micky looking to build on wins

3 March 2023

Tranmere Rovers manager Micky Mellon believes his side can find the consistency to secure positive results, ahead of Saturday’s Sky Bet League Two fixture against Hartlepool United at Prenton Park.

Rovers return to their home ground for a second successive fixture following Tuesday’s triumph over Crawley Town, which made it back-to-back wins after last weekend’s success at Stevenage.

John Askey’s Pools are the visitors to the Wirral, with former Rovers forward Connor Jennings set to line up for the North East club.

Micky previewed the game with the local press, and looks forward to seeing Jennings again, who played a memorable part in TRFC’s recent history.

Mellon said: “I’ve always said it’s about trying to find that consistency in picking up points. We want to improve parts of our game, but I think getting clean sheets and results is something to build forward from because that’s what everyone wants, to win games and trying to hit a little run at this stage of the season would be great.

“We’ll take it step-by-step and one game after game and see where it takes us.

“Both games were really direct games. Tuesday night, the goalkeeper was delivering onto our 18-yard box so you have to deal with that, and Saturday’s game was pretty much the same, so the boys showed really good qualities in dealing with that style of football, now we’ll move into Saturday’s game and deal with whatever is thrown our way.

“We try and pick a team that we think can get us a result, and the players in that team then use the qualities that they have in order to try and give us the chance of winning that game.

“We’ll have to be alert against Hartlepool this weekend but we’ll go and do what we have to do to try and win the game, and we will do that again on Saturday.

“It will be great to see Connor come back and all he did for Tranmere, he was a terrific lad to work with and a person as well, there were times he put his health on the line for the club and came out on top, which made for a great story.

“We have to find a way in that game, regardless of what Hartlepool do, we have to accept that and try to find a way to win.

”There’s a lot of points still to play for and we believe that we can beat anyone in the league on our day, and we’ve proven that, but what we need to be is consistent, and every game is very different, and you’ve got to be able to adjust, accept that and be good at that.

“Joe is still at the level that is required to help you win games at this level, he’s very good at his organising and works his back four hard. He’s a coach when he’s playing and he’s helped us win games with his clean sheets.

“It’s been a tough schedule as we’ve played against most of the top teams in a short period of time, so it’s been demanding on the group, but we’ll go into Saturday and concentrate on trying to close the gap to the play-offs.

“We’ve spoke to the lads and we have to make sure that we make it very difficult for anyone to get anything against us, then it gives us as good chance of getting a result, so we’ll keep doing that game after a game and encourage the boys to go and express themselves and keep winning games.”

Mellon provided an update on injury issues facing Rovers, with Kane Hemmings and Kieron Morris

He added: “Kane and Kieron will possibly still be a bit away, and then we’ll have to move forward without them in the immediate future.”
