Micky's reaction to Crawley victory

1 March 2023

Tranmere Rovers manager Micky Mellon says his side “showed the quality” needed to earn a 1-0 victory over Crawley Town on Tuesday night at Prenton Park.

Jordan Turnbull’s second-half strike proved the deciding moment as Rovers secured a second straight win in Sky Bet League Two.

And Micky gave his thoughts to the local media during his post-match press conference following the three points against Scott Lindsey’s Red Devils.

Mellon said: “I think we looked like a team who had invested a lot of energy into the game at the weekend and after a long journey.

“We had to look at the squad and the players on the bench to come on and inject that bit of life into the team and I think the boys that came on did just that.

“They really showed the quality we needed to win the game, and Joe Murphy made some good saves and, of course, they missed a penalty.

“I think Crawley looked a really good side and made things difficult for us but we got what we needed and that was a victory.

“We weren’t at our best in terms of passing and getting players forward, but I think it was about keeping a clean sheet and getting that victory, but the lads that came on did what they needed to do.

“We have counter-attacking centre-backs and it was good to see him (Turnbull) with a good goal for it, we needed it and we needed something from somewhere, but the lads worked their socks off, I thought Paul Lewis was excellent again, and we worked really hard,

"Harvey Saunders' work-rate and endeavour is something I'm pleased with as well, he just needs to score a goal, but the crowd can see he works hard.

“We would hope to play nicer football at times but sometimes it’s about getting the result and getting the three points.

“Full credit to the players, they’ve backed up a really important win at the weekend with a back-to-back win, and it was something that we needed to do.

“I’ll always give credit to the opposition, they came here and had a right go, and Joe when called upon made some really good saves, we know the quality that Joe’s got, he’s really important to us.”

Attention will quickly turn to the visit of Hartlepool United to Prenton Park on Saturday, and Mellon hopes that Rovers can continue their winning run of form.

He added: “The lads who have come in will keep pushing, and we’ll keep trying to win games of football and we’ll start to get organised and find that energy again, because we will have had three games in seven days, so we’ll look within the group.

“We win games of football, and you won’t hear any of us complain, so hopefully we can pick up another valuable three points at the weekend and kick on, so we’ll have a go at that.

“We’ll go again and try to win. There’s still an awful lot of points to play for and we look like we’re starting to get a bit of momentum in terms of ticking the points on the league table over, so we’ll have to keep our focus and take it game-by-game. We’ll be aiming to have a really strong end to the season and see where it takes us.”
