Match Preview | Gillingham (H)

25 November 2023

Tranmere Rovers host Gillingham at Prenton Park on Saturday 25th November (3pm kick-off), hoping to continue their encouraging form of the last two weeks.

Nigel Adkins’ side beat Forest Green Rovers 3-0 in their last home league game, before a goalless draw with League One side Wigan Athletic in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy, which the Latics went on to win on penalties.

Rovers then picked up a point on the road against Sutton United, a late equaliser from the hosts denying them all three.

Gillingham are eighth in League Two and won their first league game under new manager Stephen Clemence last weekend, 3-1 at home to Salford City.

The Kent side started the season by winning their first four games 1-0 and remain towards the top end of the table

Team news:

Adkins confirmed that striker Luke Norris requires an operation for a foot injury suffered against Forest Green and will be out of action for three months as a result.

Paul Lewis and Joe Starbuck are still a few weeks away from a return, meanwhile Josh Hawkes joined in with training on Thursday and will be back in contention very soon.

One to watch: Connor Mahoney

Right-sided midfielder Connor Mahoney has impressed on loan at Gillingham this season.

The 26-year-old arrived at Priestfield Stadium on loan from Huddersfield Town in August, putting in a string of good performances for Saturday’s visitors. He has racked up three goals and four assists in all competitions.

Mahoney’s senior career began at Accrington Stanley, as a graduate of the youth setup. He went on to sign for Blackburn Rovers, where he had spent an early part of his career on the road to professional football.

In 2017, he joined AFC Bournemouth but didn’t make a Premier League appearance for the Cherries, instead going on loan to Barnsley and later Birmingham City, where he won their Young Player of the Season award for 2018-19.

Three seasons in the Championship with Millwall followed before Mahoney moved to Huddersfield, his parent club.

Head coach: Stephen Clemence

Stephen Clemence became Gillingham’s head coach at the start of November, following the departure of Neil Harris.

The 45-year-old is in his first full-time managerial role, having been part of the coaching team at a number of different clubs.

He worked with Steve Bruce at Sunderland, Hull City, Aston Villa, Sheffield Wednesday, Newcastle United and West Bromwich Albion, winning promotion to the Premier League while with Hull as Assistant Head Coach in 2016.

He is the son of former England goalkeeper Ray Clemence.
