Mason, 15, who has been attending our Premier League Kicks sessions since age seven, has been selected for the England national squad in the junior CP team.
Mason has progressed from the Regional to National Emerging Talent Programme which is to support the transition from talent programmes to England Cerebral Palsy development squads and then hopefully to the under-21 squad.
On his selection, Mason said: “It’s amazing. I’m made up after all the hard work I put in.”
Mason said his mum found out before him, and did the classic trick of telling him he hadn’t made it before telling him the truth!
“When my mum got the email, I didn’t know about it. They tricked me to say that I didn’t get in, and then told me I’d got in! I was nearly in tears of joy.”
Having played for the regional CP teams before, Mason is looking forward to the challenge of moving up to the national squad in a new age group.
“It’s harder going up age groups now because it’s more physical with my CP but I love the challenge.
“I got used to playing in the regionals with the same players so this will be a new challenge for me.”
Asked how proud he was to be potentially representing his country after completing this new talent programme, Mason said: “I don’t have any words! If I get through the nationals, I go through the development squads and then the international squads so hopefully if I’m good enough, I can make it there and put all the hard work in.”
