Match Preview | Morecambe (A)

24 October 2023

Tranmere Rovers are on the road to Morecambe’s Mazuma Mobile Stadium on Tuesday 24th October (7.45pm kick-off).

Nigel Adkins’ team were beaten 2-1 by Doncaster Rovers at home on Friday night. Connor Jennings’ 70th minute strike brought the side back into the game, but they left Prenton Park empty handed.

Morecambe are enjoying a solid campaign in 10th and are currently five unbeaten in the league. They had delight in stoppage time at the weekend, as Joel Senior’s goal secured a 3-2 win over Sutton United.

This is the first meeting between the sides since the 2021 League Two Play-Off semi-finals, which saw the Shrimps emerge victorious.

Team news:

Goalkeeper Luke McGee and captain Tom Davies return to the side after serving their suspensions picked up at Crewe.

Jake Leake and Luke Norris continue to recover from their injuries, after joining the non-selected group in full training on Friday.

One to watch: Michael Mellon

19-year-old Michael Mellon has stood out for Morecambe this season, scoring six times in 11 league appearances.

The young forward is on loan from Premier League club Burnley, where he has six goals for the under-21's. He has been capped five times by Scotland at youth level.

Mellon initially joined the Shrimps in January for the latter half of their League One campaign last season, registering two assists.

Manager: Derek Adams

Derek Adams began his second spell at Morecambe in February 2022, after winning promotion to League One with the Shrimps via the Play-Offs the season before.

His managerial career began at Ross County in 2007, initially combined with his services as a player. He won the Scottish Second Division title in his first season and reached the Scottish Cup final in 2010, losing 3-0 to Dundee United.

A brief period as assistant at Hibernian followed before Adams returned to Victoria Park and secured promotion to the Scottish Premiership, losing one league game in the whole campaign.

He ventured into English football as manager of Plymouth Argyle in 2015 and lifted the Devon side into League One two years later. His two spells as Morecambe boss came next, either side of eight months at Bradford City.
