Tranmere Rovers 4-1 Blackburn Community Women

16 October 2023

Tranmere Rovers Women made a resounding statement on Sunday, recapturing their position at the summit of the league with a crucial three-point haul. The home side displayed their prowess in a convincing 4-1 win over Blackburn Community Sports Club Women, showcasing their dominance on the field.

The match kicked off with an unfortunate twist for Tranmere as Izzy Arrowsmith was forced off due to an early injury. However, the setback didn't deter the Rovers from their mission. Anya McCready set the tone for the match with a stunning strike from the edge of the box, sending the ball soaring into the top corner and giving Tranmere the early lead.

Blackburn briefly found some momentum as the first half progressed, but Tranmere's staunch defence, led by goalkeeper Size, thwarted their attempts. In a crucial moment, Size denied a one-on-one opportunity for the Blackburn centre forward, making a crucial save.

Amy Shannon extended Tranmere's lead by cleverly manoeuvring past her defender and calmly slotting the ball past the goalkeeper. As the first half concluded, the Rovers went into the break with a commanding lead, having displayed a dominant performance.

The second half saw Blackburn mount a comeback as Niamh Rutherford delivered a precise cross from the right-hand side, which was met by Ellie Brands, who found the bottom corner of the net. Nevertheless, Tranmere continued to battle to preserve their lead. Their persistence paid off when Lorna Stratton controlled the ball in a crowded area and managed to slot it past the visiting goalkeeper, restoring their two-goal advantage.

In the dying moments of the match, Tranmere put the game to bed with a free-kick opportunity from 20 yards out. Kiah Sullivan stepped up and delivered a perfect strike that sailed into the area, eluding everyone and nestling into the back of the net.

With the final whistle, Tranmere secured a crucial victory, reaffirming their position at the top of the league standings. The win puts them back on track and sets the stage for future success.

Tranmere Rovers Women will now shift their focus to FA Cup action, as they prepare to face Chester-le-Street at Ellesmere Port Sports Village with a 2pm kick-off. The team will look to carry the momentum from this impressive win into the upcoming cup fixture.
