Josh Hawkes: "The dressing room knew we had to win"

23 September 2023

Josh Hawkes has hailed the team's performance in a "must-win", as his two goals helped Tranmere to a 2-0 victory over ten-man Accrington Stanley.

Rovers picked up their first points since the win against Harrogate Town last month, and the forward wants to see momentum continue to build from here.

"The full dressing room knew we had to win," he said post-match. "The longer a losing run goes on, it can be tough. Hopefully now we can push on and start moving up that table."

Hawkes opened the scoring with a cool penalty in the 14th minute, before doubling his tally from range at the start of the second half, firing a low effort beyond substitute goalkeeper Jack McIntyre.

"Thankfully the goalie went early and gave me an easy decision to put it in the other corner. There's a few 'keepers that aren't happy [with the run-up], but they've just got to deal with it!

"Whoever scored in that second half, it was an important time to score. The longer it's 1-0, they start to get a bit of confidence and it can be difficult."
