Match Preview | Colchester United (A)

7 September 2023

Tranmere Rovers make the trip to Colchester United this Saturday 9th September (3pm kick-off) as the team bid to return to winning ways.

Following Tuesday evening’s defeat at Fleetwood Town, Ian Dawes’ side turn their attentions back to league action this weekend.

Colchester sit one place below Rovers in the current League Two standings in 22nd, after winning one of their first five league games.

The last time Rovers travelled to Essex to face the U’s resulted in a 1-1 draw back in March, Noah Chilvers’ second-half penalty cancelling out a Harvey Saunders opener.

Rovers beat Colchester at Prenton Park last season via a 2-0 victory back in August 2022, thanks to goals from Josh Hawkes and Jake Burton.

Team news:

Tom Davies, Joe Yarney and Luke Norris will all be assessed on Friday ahead of the game, while Jake Leake and Lee O'Connor will be missing as they recover from respective hamstring and ankle injuries.

One to watch: Joe Taylor

The loanee from Luton Town has scored four of Colchester’s eight goals so far this season.

Taylor signed for Luton in January this year after a spell with Peterborough United, but was restricted to six Championship appearances before his loan to the Essex side this summer.

The forward who developed in Norwich City’s youth setup has represented Wales at under-21 level.

Head Coach: Ben Garner

Garner started his coaching career at Crystal Palace’s academy before being promoted to first team coach, working under the likes of Tony Pulis and Alan Pardew.

The 43-year-old then moved to West Bromwich Albion before a spell in the Indian Super League with Atlético de Kolkata.

He began his career as a Head Coach with Bristol Rovers before stints in charge of Swindon Town and Charlton Athletic, prior to the move to Colchester in March of this year.
