Match Preview | Forest Green Rovers (A)

22 February 2024

Tranmere Rovers are back on their travels this weekend, taking on a Forest Green Rovers side currently positioned in the relegation zone.

Nigel Adkins’ side head to The Bolt New Lawn on Saturday 24th February (3pm), looking to carry over the momentum generated from last weekend’s 4-0 victory over league leaders Stockport County.

Goals from Tom Davies, Connor Jennings and a Jordan Turnbull double helped Tranmere get back to winning ways at home in sumptuous style.

Forest Green Rovers were defeated last time out, 2-0 away to Crawley Town. Steve Cotterill’s side are 23rd in League Two, six points adrift of safety.

Tranmere were 3-0 victors in November’s reverse fixture, thanks to goals from Kristian Dennis, Rob Apter and a Tyrese Omotoye own goal, a win that lifted Rovers out of the bottom two.

Team news:

Jake Leake is the only player in the Rovers squad unavailable for selection, though he has trained with the main group this week for the first time since picking up his injury.

One to watch: Christian Doidge

Christian Doidge, Forest Green’s record goalscorer, returned to the club at the end of January from Scottish Premiership side Hibernian.

The Welsh forward scored 66 goals in 122 appearances in his first spell, before heading north of the border in 2019.

Doidge found the net 41 times in the Scottish top flight for Hibs, adding a further three in a loan spell with Kilmarnock. He hit the target for Steve Cotterill’s side in his first game, during a 3-3 draw with Colchester United.

Manager: Steve Cotterill

Steve Cotterill became Forest Green’s third permanent manager since the start of the league season, following Troy Deeney’s departure in January.

The 59-year-old first found managerial success with the club’s Gloucestershire rivals, Cheltenham Town, guiding the Robins from the Conference to League One between 1997-2002, also picking up the FA Trophy in 1998.

Cotterill went on to lead several sides in the Football League. He won the League Two title with Notts County in 2010, and did the double with Bristol City, winning promotion to the Championship and the EFL Trophy at Wembley in the 2014-15 season.
