Match Report: Tranmere Rovers 2-2 Doncaster Rovers (behind closed doors)

20 February 2024

Tranmere Rovers drew 2-2 against Doncaster Rovers in their friendly match behind closed doors on Tuesday afternoon, with goals from Luke Norris and Josh Hawkes.

It was a chance for some players to get valuable minutes under their belt, such as returnee from injury Luke Norris and new signing Ousmane Kane, who both started the game.

Tranmere’s first chance came two minutes into the match when Luke Norris laid the ball off for Sam Taylor on the edge of the box, but the youngster saw his shot down the middle saved.

Kyle Hurst forced a save out of Joe Murphy at the other end moments later after the forward had latched onto a loose touch.

Taylor had another chance after a cross from Kristian Dennis soon after, but it was well cut out in the six-yard box by Joseph Olowu.

Tranmere took the lead on 14 minutes through Luke Norris, after Joe Starbuck set Taylor on the break to race into the box and square for the striker to tap home.

Both sides took their time in trying to break the opposition down as the first half wore on, Joe Yarney producing an important block as we approached the half-hour mark.

Murphy saved well from a Doncaster trialist a few minutes later, getting down low to his right to stop a goalbound effort.

Taylor broke away again with nine to go before the break, teeing up Dennis on the edge of the box this time, but the low shot was saved.

On the stroke of half time, Rovers doubled their lead through Josh Hawkes who cut inside from the left before smashing home to take a two-goal lead into the break.

Doncaster pulled one back on the hour mark, Jack Degruchy tapping home from a cross from the right.

Tranmere almost restored their two-goal lead seven minutes later, Dennis’ shot from the edge of the box sliding just wide of the post.

Doncaster hit back from a corner just after that chance, Jack Goodman getting there first to poke the ball into the net and pull the visitors level.

Paul Lewis came on for Kane and saw an effort at goal blocked soon after, linking up well with James Norris for the move.

The contest ultimately finished in a draw, with many players gaining valuable game time.
