Match Report: Tranmere Rovers 4-0 Stockport County

17 February 2024

Tranmere Rovers defeated league leaders Stockport County by four goals to nil at Prenton Park on Saturday afternoon.

In one change from Tuesday evening’s side, Brad Walker returned from injury to replace Reece McAlear.

Rovers started brightly, early crosses coming in from Rob Apter and Regan Hendry on the right and left respectively, but Stockport were able to clear their lines on each occasion.

There was an early show of flair when Walker pirouetted his man in midfield before Rovers won a corner, but the visitors again stood firm.

Both sides cancelled each other out as the first half progressed, each holding their shape well providing their opposite number with a tactical test of resolve.

Connor Jennings saw a shot blocked in the box not far short of the half-hour mark, as Tranmere continued to push.

Rovers forged ahead on the half-hour mark itself after a defensive mix-up from Stockport caused by a testing Walker free-kick.

Tranmere went close to a second when Harvey Saunders headed at goal from a Hendry free-kick, as Rovers continued to be a danger from set-piece situations.

Apter went even closer to that second goal when his volley from the edge of the box was well saved by a diving Ben Hinchliffe, but Rovers ultimately took the one-goal lead into the break.

Luke McGee produced an excellent save to keep the scores level three minutes into the second half from half-time substitute Will Collar’s close-range header.

Rovers went up the other end three minutes later, Hendry sliding Kieron Morris into acres of space, but Hinchliffe saved well and Apter miscued his follow-up.

In an end-to-end start to the second period, Stockport had another chance of their own just moments later when Odin Bailey shot narrowly wide from the right of the box.

Rovers doubled their lead on 55 minutes when Jordan Turnbull got on the end of a Stockport back-header from another Walker free-kick to knock home under the Kop.

Stockport responded immediately but Tanto Olaofe fired over the bar from close range.

Tranmere had a third on 63 minutes when Jordan Turnbull turned in from a corner.

Saunders almost made it four just three minutes later, producing another diving save from Hinchliffe with a shot from the edge of the box.

It was almost a hat-trick for Turnbull on 72 minutes when he attacked a corner with a headed effort which sailed just over the bar.

Substitute Paddy Madden almost pulled one back for Stockport on 77 minutes, but his effort from a corner was well blocked.

Rovers responded though and almost forced a fourth with a goalmouth scramble moments later.

Tranmere had four with four minutes to go when Apter teed up Jennings to hit home and send the SWA into raptures, to cap off an excellent victory.
