Match Report: Grimsby Town 1-2 Tranmere Rovers

27 January 2024

Tranmere Rovers were victorious on the road with a 2-1 win at Grimsby Town on Saturday.

Rovers were straight on the front foot, Brad Walker finding the run of Apter in the opening moments but the winger’s shot from the edge of the box was narrowly wide.

After a quiet start, the hosts grew into the game and saw their first shot on target in the 11th minute when Danny Rose headed Abou Eisa’s cross goalwards, but Luke McGee was there to gather.

Tranmere fought back and almost edged ahead when Apter played in Connor Jennings on the right of goal, but his shot was over the bar.

Grimsby had a great chance to go ahead 20 minutes into the match, but Rovers got back well to defend their six-yard box.

Rovers took the lead on 36 minutes when Rob Apter found space on the right to cut into the box and stroke the ball past Harvey Cartwright and into the far corner.

Grimsby levelled just three minutes later, debutant Doug Tharme taking advantage of a free-kick into the box to poke home and take the sides in level at the break.

Tranmere regained the lead on 55 minutes through a Toby Mullarkey own goal after Apter fizzed a ball across the box and the defender bundled it in at the back post.

The hosts put on the pressure for another equaliser but Rovers defended well, Tom Davies and Brad Walker both getting in with crucial blocks.

Luke McGee produced a couple of equally crucial saves as Grimsby threatened further.

Rovers look to hit the hosts on the counter, and Kieron Morris raced into the box as the half wore on only to be stopped by the home defence.

Tranmere stood firm and ultimately took the three points and another big away win.
