Tranmere Rovers’ Wirral Grammar School team win EFL Utilita Girls Cup finals to reach Wembley

4 March 2024

A team representing Tranmere Rovers from Wirral Grammar School for Girls were victorious at the EFL Utilita Girls Cup Regional Final last week, reaching the National Final at Wembley.

The final will be played on the pitch at Wembley Stadium before the Bristol Street Motors Trophy final on Sunday 7th April.

The school team won our Local Finals on the Wirral before progressing to the Area Finals at Wigan, which they won by beating sides such as Wrexham and Stoke City, and last week defeated Sunderland in the final game of the Regional Finals.

Ella scored the winning goal against Sunderland at this year’s Regional Finals hosted by Sheffield Wednesday FC Community Programme.

Some of the team reached the Regional Finals a year below the age of some of the other teams last year, with the chance to go to Wembley tantalisingly close but lost out to Stockport in the final game, who they overcame at the Area Finals this time around.

After lifting the trophy with her teammates, Ella said: “Last year we were very close and then I just remember how upsetting it was when we didn’t make it.

“Now, we’ve pushed ourselves to go that extra step further to make it to Wembley.

Wirral Grammar School for Girls’ Head of Year 8 and the team’s coach, Mrs Shields, said: “I couldn’t be prouder of the girls who worked so hard. It’s a new team this year, half the girls were here last year and half of them are new ones in Year 7.

“They just played so well. I think they thoroughly deserved to get to Wembley so I can’t wait to get there and hopefully come back victorious!”
