Ben Pringle became Tranmere Rovers’ fourth signing of the January transfer window on Tuesday, with the midfielder coming in on loan from Preston North End until the end of the season.
The 29-year-old Newcastle-upon-Tyne native played youth football at the famed Wallsend Boys Club, following in the footsteps of the likes of Michael Carrick and Alan Shearer.
He began his professional career as a trainee at West Bromwich Albion but would later drop down to non-league level with Newcastle Blue Star, Morpeth Town and Ilkeston Town.
Pringle’s form in the non-leagues saw him attract interest from Derby County, who he signed for in May 2009, making his debut for the Rams in the August of that year as a substitute in a 2-1 opening day home win over Peterborough United.
Over two-years at Derby, Pringle would make 20 appearances for the Pride Park side and spent time on loan at Torquay United prior to leaving permanently after securing a transfer to Rotherham United in June 2011.
Pringle would enjoy success in South Yorkshire in his four-year spell at the Millers. In 147 league appearances, he scored 19 goals as Rotherham secured back-to-back promotions, firstly from League Two in 2012/13, before a League One Play-Off Final penalty shoot-out win over Leyton Orient at Wembley, which secured Championship football at the New York Stadium.
At the end of the 2013/14 season, Pringle’s efforts in helping Rotherham to their promotion earned him a place in the PFA League One Team of the Year.
In June 2015, Pringle swapped South Yorkshire for West London as he secured a move to Fulham, signing for the Craven Cottage side on a two-year deal on the same day as goalkeeper Andy Lonergan.
Pringle would make 18 appearances for Fulham in all competitions before spending the second half of that season at Ipswich Town, where he made 10 league appearances under Mick McCarthy.
Pringle returned North in July 2016, signing for Preston North End, with the midfielder making 14 appearances in all competitions during his first season at Deepdale.
The midfielder later signed for Oldham Athletic in January 2018, turning out 15 times during his temporary stay with the club, scoring the one goal in a derby draw at Bury.
Most recently loaned to Grimsby Town, he made 18 appearances at the Mariners before linking up with TRFC at Prenton Park until the end of the 2018/19 season.
