Wirral school team representing Tranmere Rovers win Utilita Girls Cup at Wembley

8 April 2024

A team from Wirral Grammar School for Girls representing Tranmere Rovers were victorious in the EFL Utilita Girls Cup national final on the pitch at Wembley on Sunday, prior to the Bristol Street Motors Trophy final.

The girls’ team progressed all the way from our local finals at Weatherhead High School against Wirral schools, on to the area finals where they beat North West-based teams such as Wrexham, Stockport County and Stoke City.

They then progressed to the regional finals where they defeated the likes of Sunderland, all the way to the national final against Norwich City.

The team made the trip to Wembley on Saturday before taking to the pitch on Sunday ahead of the Bristol Street Motors final between Peterborough and Wycombe Wanderers.

After a tightly contested goalless draw, the game went to penalties, and in Rovers colours, the girls defeated Norwich on penalties by a score of 7-6 after a save from Ella.

Former England midfielder Izzy Christiansen, Utilita Girls Cup ambassador, handed over the trophy to the winning side from Wembley's Royal Box.

The Utilita Girls Cup is one of the country’s biggest national tournaments – which has seen around 7,000 girls and over 700 teams take part this year – linked to the regions of the 72 EFL Clubs.

Wirral Grammar School for Girls’ Head of Year 8 and the team’s coach, Mrs Shields, said: "It was an incredible weekend. The whole experience was so special.

"The girls and staff were treated like a professional team. From the night in the hotel to having the kits hung in the changing rooms ready for the big game.

"It was an incredible match and the girls kept their nerves in check despite having a big crowd in the stands. Each girl stepped up for their penalty with determination, I am so proud of each one of them.

"This has been one of the best weekends of my teaching career.

The support from Shirley (Tranmere Rovers in the Community) has been fantastic and I would like to thank her for all her support throughout the tournament."

Tranmere Rovers in the Community hosted the local finals of the tournament and has supported the girls at each stage throughout, so we are delighted to see the girls return from Wembley victorious.
