Setting the scene…
Tranmere Rovers return to Sky Bet League Two action on Saturday afternoon when they host managerless Cambridge United at Prenton Park.
Micky Mellon’s Wirral outfit are currently eighth in the fourth-tier, level on points with seventh-placed Exeter City, who currently occupy the final Play-Off position.
Rovers will be aiming to return to winning ways following their last league outing, a 5-2 defeat away at Grimsby Town just over a week ago, before being held at home by Southport in the FA Cup second-round last Sunday.
Meanwhile, Cambridge head into the fixture in 21st position, having recently parted company with manager Joe Dunne following the U’s recent 2-0 defeat away at Crewe Alexandra.
Team news
Ollie Banks has a hernia and will be out for a minimum of four weeks. Larnell Cole has a hamstring injury and it will be 10 days before he can return to training.
Harvey Gilmour has a bruised foot and will require a fitness test. Dylan Mottley-Henry has a grade two torn hamstring and has returned to Barnsley for treatment.
The U’s season so far
It has been a tough start to the 2018/19 season for Cambridge, who find themselves three points above the relegation positions in Sky Bet League Two.
A run of five wins from 20 games in the fourth-tier saw boss Dunne depart after seven months in permanent charge.
Coach Mark Bonner has been placed in a caretaker manager role at the Abbey Stadium while Cambridge search for a successor to Dunne.
Should the Cambridgeshire side earn three points at Prenton Park, a win could move them up two positions to 19th in the table.
One to Watch
Sheffield-born midfielder George Maris has been a positive performer for Cambridge.
Beginning his playing career within the youth set up at Barnsley, Maris would go onto sign professional terms at Oakwell before making three appearances for the Tykes.
To aid his footballing development, Maris spent time on loan away from South Yorkshire with Nuneaton, Guiseley and Lincoln City.
The 22-year-old departed Barnsley permanently in June 2016, signing for Cambridge.
Maris has since made over 70 appearances for the Abbey Stadium club, and this season he has scored five goals having turned out 25 times for his side.
