Setting the scene…

Tranmere Rovers are back in action at Prenton Park on Saturday afternoon when they host Oldham Athletic in Sky Bet League Two.

Having earned a place in the FA Cup second round after strikes from James Norwood and Paul Mullin in the opening half hour beat Oxford City 2-0 away on Tuesday night, Rovers’ attention returns to the league.

Micky Mellon’s seventh-placed side lost 3-2 at Crewe Alexandra last weekend and they welcome Oldham to the Wirral, with Frankie Bunn’s men winning 3-1 at home to Cambridge United in their last league outing.

George Edmundson, Jordan Lyden and Callum Lang were on target as the Greater Manchester outfit moved up to 12th position.

Team news

Cole Stockton and Liam Ridehalgh returned to the first team fold in Tuesday night's win at Oxford City.

Ollie Banks and James Norwood have slight knocks and will face late fitness tests.

Steve McNulty will be back in contention for the game after being rested for the FA Cup tie.

The Latics season so far

From their 18 games so far this season, Bunn has led Oldham to six wins in League Two.

Victories against Morecambe, Macclesfield Town, Crawley Town, Grimsby Town, Cheltenham Town and Cambridge United has seen the Boundary Park side on 24 points, six points off the Play-Off positions.

Should they win at Tranmere, Oldham could move up two positions in Sky Bet League Two.

One to watch

Callum Lang is the player that Tranmere’s defence need to keep an eye on when Oldham visit Prenton Park.

Born in Liverpool, Lang began his career in the youth set up at Anfield before moving to Wigan Athletic’s youth system.

Turning professional at the DW Stadium, 20-year-old Lang made his senior debut in Wigan colours in an EFL Cup tie with Blackpool in August 2017.

He joined League Two side Morecambe on loan deal later that same month, scoring 10 goals in 30 games for the Shrimps as Jim Bentley’s side survived in the fourth tier on the final day of the season.

Lang signed on loan for Oldham before the start of the 2018/19 campaign and has since netted four times for the club.

The referee

Sebastian Stockbridge will be the man in the middle as Tranmere Rovers face Oldham Athletic at Prenton Park.

The Tyne-and-Wear match official has taken charge of 15 fixtures across the EFL this season, brandishing 40 yellow cards and one red one.

Acting as assistant referees will be Richard Bartlett and Anthony Moore, who will run the line, while Thomas Harty will be the fourth official.
