Flashback: Ipswich Town 1996

26 September 2019

For each fixture this season, we will take a trip down memory lane to recall a Tranmere Rovers match against each of our Sky Bet League One opponents.

Taking you back to the 1996/97 campaign, and Rovers enjoyed a fine pair of results against Ipswich Town as they did the double over the Tractor Boys.

This week’s Flashback memorable match comes from our last victory against Ipswich, then managed by George Burley.

Having secured a 2-0 away win at Portman Road a month earlier, John Aldridge, who was player-manager of Rovers, welcomed Ipswich up to the Wirral on 30th November 1996 in the Football League First Division.

And Rovers were rampant that Saturday afternoon as they comfortably saw off their opponents from Suffolk, securing maximum points by winning 3-0.

Aldridge, in his first full campaign in the dugout, netted a double in the win, alongside a strike from Gerard Brannan as Rovers sealed a second straight triumph in the league after defeating Manchester City at Maine Road the previous week.

Rovers went on to end that season with an 11th placed finish as they collected 65 points.
