World Alzheimer's Day 2019

20 September 2019

World Alzheimer’s Day 2019 takes place on Saturday 21st September, and Tranmere Rovers In the Community are helping support those affected through their weekly Dementia Friendly afternoons.

An international campaign to raise awareness and highlight issues faced by people affected by Dementia, World Alzheimer’s Day is a part of World Alzheimer’s Month and takes place every year on 21st September.

Dementia Friendly afternoons run every Thursday from 2pm-4pm and those with Dementia and their carers can spend an afternoon enjoying free activities at the Tranmere Rovers Recreation Centre.

Around 15/20 older people are engaged each week through quizzes, games, bingo and light exercise.

The team offer a supportive environment for other carers to meet and to relieve the pressure of looking after a partner full-time.
Participant Jean, who attends with her brother-in-law Peter, praised the impact that the Dementia Friendly group has on its members.
Jean said: “We are able to bring my brother-in-law here because he has to be in an enclosed space because if he gets out, he goes wandering so this is ideal for us because he’s always looked after.

“It enables us to get him out of the nursing home for a couple of hours into a different atmosphere and environment. It is a very friendly and it is an afternoon out for me, and my husband and we get the pleasure out of it of being able to bring him out.

“It’s mostly quizzes and bingo and talking to other people but I think one of the main things is, although me or my husband haven’t got Alzheimer’s, we’ve have been able to speak to the other ladies whose husbands have got Alzheimer’s so it gives them a chance to have a conversation so it enables them to have a chat with other ladies as it’s only the men who have got it in this group.

“I always recommend Tranmere Rovers to people to come and anybody I know who has got somebody in the family with Alzheimer’s because it is really good.”

Tranmere Rovers in the Community's Dementia Friendly Afternoon takes place every Thursday in the Recreation Centre Cafe, located at Prenton Park and runs 2-4pm. It is open for those who have Alzheimers, their carers and their loved ones.
