Micky reacts to win against Shrewsbury

26 February 2020

Tranmere Rovers manager Micky Mellon believes his side deserved their dramatic 3-2 win away to Shrewsbury Town at the New Meadow on Tuesday night.

Corey Blackett-Taylor struck a 95th minute winner when he raced onto Scott Davies’ punt to drive low across Salop goalkeeper Max O’Leary and earn a big three points.

Rovers had initially led by two goals at the break courtesy of Mark Ellis and Alex Woodyard, who steered in strikes during the opening 14 minutes.

But efforts from Aaron Pierre and Callum Lang within seven second half minutes drew Sam Ricketts’ hosts level.

However, Blackett-Taylor was there to seal the result in Rovers’ favour with his last-gasp heroics. Deep into injury-time

And following the triumph at his former club, Mellon gave his thoughts on the game in his post-match press conference.

Mellon said: “It was certainly dramatic. It was a really hard-fought game and we always looked a threat when we got anything up to Corey and Cookie.

“Connor came on and did a great shift for us as well and it was by no means a smash and grab, we deserved our result.

“It’s tough on Shrewsbury with the time that we scored, but the bits of unfortunate stuff that we have had over the past few weeks, we’ll certainly take that.

“We scored three goals away from home, one of them was in the 95th minute, to win such an important game for us.

“But we need to be a bit tougher with the way that we let them back into the game, and we will learn from that.

“They have the bit between their teeth, and they know that we are fighting for our lives to try and dig out of the situation that we are in, so it is important that we fight like that.

Micky also reserved special praise for the SWA who had travelled down to Shropshire to back the lads to three points.

He added: “It shows that we are capable, and it shows that we are fighting. We were backed by an unbelievable support and they were terrific from the first minute.”
