Spearing: We need to show consistency

5 November 2020

Tranmere Rovers midfielder Jay Spearing can’t wait to play once again in the FA Cup.

Spearing, who returned to the team on Tuesday night in the win at Harrogate, has played for Liverpool in the FA Cup final during his career, and he wants Rovers to be in the hat for the next round come the close of play on Saturday.

Speaking in Thursday’s pre-match press conference on Thursday at the Campus, Spearing looked ahead to Saturday’s opponents, Accrington Stanley.

“Tuesday’s win was a building block, we have not been consistent throughout and that has shown with our results.

“We went into Tuesday’s game trying to build on a way of playing and an identity to Tranmere Rovers and how we want to play. We want to be more consistent with more positive performances and results.

“We have got the ability to hurt teams, but we need to be more of a team and a squad if we want to be successful this season.

“The players we have in this squad are capable of doing good things, but it is about us as a whole with some special individual moments.

“I love this competition, as a young boy I was told all about it, I used to watch FA Cup matches on TV and it has a great history. There are upsets every single year and it brings out the best in players.

“You look forward to the draw and we are pleased to be playing at home this weekend. It will be a tough test. Tuesday’s performance has given us confidence, but we can’t rest on that.

“We have to bring some consistency to the team, with how we want to play and have an identity of what we are. On Saturday, if we do those things, we have got a great chance of going into the hat for the next round.”
