Match Preview | Forest Green Rovers

23 September 2021

Tranmere Rovers will be aiming for back-to-back wins in Sky Bet League Two when they visit table toppers Forest Green Rovers on Saturday, 3pm kick-off.

Micky Mellon’s men overcame Salford City at Prenton Park last weekend, through Kieron Morris’ first-half penalty before Elliott Nevitt headed in three minutes after the break.

Team news

In his pre-match press conference, Mellon reported there were no new injury concerns leading into this weekend's game. Joe Murphy is still absent after his injury earlier this month at Rochdale and Club captain, Scott Davies, remains on the sidelines.

One to watch

Forward Jamille Matt has been in fine form so far this season for the league leaders, scoring six goals.

Matt, 31, started out in Non-League with Kidderminster Harriers, spending three seasons at Aggborough where he made 62 appearances, scoring 22 goals.

His form as a Kidderminster player caught the eye of Fleetwood Town, who broke their club record fee to take him to Highbury in January 2013.

During his time on the Fylde Coast, Matt was a part of the side who won promotion from Sky Bet League Two via the Play-Offs at Wembley in May 2014.

After featuring over 60 times in Fleetwood colours, Matt had stints playing for Stevenage, Plymouth, Blackpool, Grimsby Town, and Newport County.

Matt penned a contract at Forest Green last summer, netting 17 goals in 40 appearances last term, and having been appointed as club captain, he has continued to impress in front of goal.

The manager

Rob Edwards was appointed at The New Lawn back in May.

Born in Madeley, Shropshire, Edwards was a centre-back during a career which spanned 14-years.

He started out at Aston Villa but had notable highlights in the colours of Wolverhampton Wanderers and Blackpool, with whom he won promotion to the Premier League in 2010.

Edwards retired in 2013 and joined the coaching staff at his old club, Wolves.

Management opportunities with Telford United and a return to Molineux as an U23s boss before joining up with the FA to take charge of England U16s youth set-up followed.

The 38-year-old was named as the new man in the Forest Green dugout during the off-season and has led the Gloucestershire outfit to six wins in eight games.
